Alternative radio chart toppers The Unlikely Candidates will be premiering the new music video for their single “High Low” via YouTube on October 7th at 6PM EDT/3PM PDT. The video will be available to view HERE but fans can tune in from 5:45-7PM EDT/2:45-4PM PDT for an exclusive live chat with the band on YouTube. “High Low” was directed by Mattias Russo-Larsson, who directed the music video for the band’s previous single and breakout hit “Novocaine“, and features TUC frontman, Kyle Morris, in isolation with nothing but his thoughts, custom TUC dolls, and a Playstation.
“I don’t think we could have made a video more symbolic of the quarantine for ‘High Low’. We took how surreal and isolating this year has been and manifested it into this lonely bedroom dream world,” states Morris on the music video. “The band wasn’t able to fly out and film, so we used action figures of them as their replacements. We were able to twist that into some whimsical madness as I happily interact with “the band” in the video, while at same time lament that I am actually just going a little crazy alone in my room. For anyone using FaceTime or Zoom during the quarantine, you probably know the feeling a bit. Our director Mattias, took a rough situation and turned it into something bizzare, timely, and entertaining. I think it ended up being a great representation of the times and of a song about looking back at the good days, from the view on your bed, and wondering where they all have gone.”
Mattias Russo-Larsson, director of both “High Low” and “Novocaine”, adds, “Working with Kyle, Cole, Brent, Jared, and Kevin on ‘Novocaine’ was exactly what you aim for when shooting a music video. We were genuinely just having so much damn fun throughout, even though we were all sleep deprived and over traveled/worked. The exhaustion honestly helps with the humor because you’re kind of delirious making everything that’s kind of silly, a lot funnier. The guys entertained my requests at every turn. That’s the dream, to work with talent that is always down for one more take, to wait another 2.5 hours at a ghost town gas station to get another shot as the sun goes down. It’s that willingness to push things a little further that really adds up in the end.
Shooting ‘High Low’, was in the same way a really entertaining process. Writing concepts for the guys is fun because there is a lot of room for taking things a little seriously and exploring the child like goofiness that I wouldn’t normally dare to attempt with other artists. The challenge this time was that because of COVID-19 we needed to keep the shoot as small as possible, meaning only having Kyle come out to LA to do a video we could shoot in one day entirely in a studio, with a tiny crew of close friends, who had all been quarantined in the months leading up. The idea to make action figures of Kevin, Jared, Brent, and Cole was one of those ideas you’re completely unsure if it’s actually horrible, but the great thing was I knew that Kyle trusted me and was game to buy in. I guess we’ll see in the comments if it’s trash. Personally, I definitely laughed a lot while directing Kyle and his ‘imaginary’ friends. Although, I really missed the rest of the gang. They’ve got this hilarious group dynamic and banter that they themselves don’t really intend to be funny.”
“High Low“, The Unlikely Candidates latest single and follow up to their hit song “Novocaine”, is currently climbing the Alt Radio Chart at #18. The track has been featured on Spotify’s The New Alt and It’s ALT Good playlists, Apple Music’s Breaking Alternative playlist, and Pandora’s Alternative Hits playlist. Formed in Fort Worth, Texas in 2008, The Unlikely Candidates have released three EP’s since 2013, and are grateful that years of hardship and hard work finally yielded rabid fans and rave reviews. As the song goes: It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock & roll and in the case of The Unlikely Candidates–one of the most energetic alt-rock bands to ever take a stage–their long journey includes years of crisscrossing the U.S. on tour; record label fiascos; bones broken on stage; and tour bus disasters. So the success of 2019’s impossibly catchy single “Novocaine” (#1 on the alternative charts; over 20 million YouTube views; over 55 million streams) is more than well deserved. “Novocaine”‘s huge success (itbeat out Billie Eilish for the #1 spoton the Alternative Radio Chart), landed the track on Vevo’s “Most Watched Alternative Video List.” It was also featured in the Season 4 trailer of HULU’s Veronica Mars, and on Now That’s What I Call Music. Additionally, TUC tunes have been featured on Ray Donovan, ABC’s American Idol, FOX’s The Four, NFL’s Super Bowl 2018 playoffs, ESPN’s 2018 Indy 500 programming, Fox Sports and more. Along the way, on tours with Sublime, With Rome, The Offspring, the Dirty Heads and Fall Out Boy, the band earned acclaim from The New York Times, Nylon, and Esquire.
The Unlikely Candidates is Kyle Morris (vocals), Brenton Carney (lead guitar), Cole Male (guitar), Jared Hornbeek (bass) and Kevin Goddard (drums).
