Recently, artist Brianna Harness sat down to talk with VolumeOne about her music and current tour with her father, Struggle Jennings.

Harness marks the newest generation of a legendary musical bloodline—Jessi Colter and Waylon Jennings are her great-grandparents—yet she grew up under challenging circumstances, surrounded by dysfunction and addiction. Now, at age 22, Harness has released her debut album, Welcome to My Nightmare, a startlingly mature and diverse collection that draws from her own history and points to a bright future. Sometimes, tremendous adversity can produce the greatest beauty and this spring, she is ready to take her story to the road.

“What I went through helped mold the person I am today,” says Brianna Harness. “I like to make music based off of the things that I’ve experienced, so people know that they can get through those situations and that they’re not alone.”

Harness’ perspective is informed by her early years, which were deeply impacted by the underbelly of the world of drugs. At the age of fifteen, Harness left the family home, setting her on a path to become the fiercely independent and self-reliant woman she is today.

Nightmare is the follow-up to Sunny Days, a four-song EP of duets with her father, rapper Struggle Jennings, which spent a month at Number One on the iTunes Blues Album Chart and amassed over 16 million views on YouTube. For the album, though, Harness pursued a wide range of musical styles, from atmospheric indie rock to a lounge-y, nightclub vibe. She has amassed over 14 million streams across all DSPs and has a devoted fan base of 66K average monthly listeners.
